Ankylosing Spondylitis is a chronic inflammatory arthritis and autoimmune disease – and there is no known cure – just ways to manage it. sufferers can have periods of remission though, while others will have constant pain and progressive disability. the drugs you’ve been prescribed are anti-inflammatory, and it’s vitally important that you take them as prescribed – and it’s likely these will be long-term medications for you. management of Ankylosing Spondylitis is a combination of medications to reduce inflammation and pain, and physical therapy to maintain mobility and posture. Medical management with medications always comes before physical therapy though – because you first have to get the pain under control. the exercise and good posture is important, as that will help to stave off problems such as curvature and fusion of your spine.

living with a chronic pain condition is not easy, and it’s important for you to learn everything you can about your condition – so you understand it and your treatment options. develop a good relationship with your doctor, and find yourself a good physiotherapist who is experienced in working with people who suffer from ankylosing spondylitis.
