Symptoms Of Rheumatoid Arthritis And Arthritis Information

There are times when our own body cells can get confused or damaged and attack perfectly healthy tissues. This is the base cause of rheumatoid arthritis, where white blood cells start to cause damage, specifically in the joints and cartilage. The symptoms can be eased depending on which stage of the disease you are in. As with many conditions rheumatoid arthritis is best caught in the early stages and treated with disease modifying anti rheumatic drugs DMARD’s). These have been proven to have excellent results. If you are experiencing symptoms that you feel may be those of rheumatoid arthritis see your Doctor as soon as possible.

Symptoms of RA include swollen and/or painful joints, usually in the hands or feet, with complaints of morning stiffness and flu like symptoms. One of the tell tale symptoms of RA is a patients inability to cope with small things, buttons etc. Later in the cycle there may well be an inability to pick up a tea cup for instance.

There are options available to patients in the later stages of RA such as anti-inflammatory drugs. Aspirin and ibuprofen are two examples in common use. They are very effective treatments for inflammation and pain but sadly, like so many drugs, they do have side effects which can include heart and gastrointestinal problems. If your Doctor prescribes these drugs it is worth asking whether acetaminophen would be a better alternative as it does not produce the side effects noted above.

In the early stages of RA when the symptoms are mild, moderate exercise is very beneficial. Exercises should include stretching, bending and light weight lifting. At the first notice of discomfort you should rest. The lifting of weights and stretching increases flexibility, strength and balance. Another excellent form of exercise is aqua therapy. The water supports our body easing the stress on the joints whilst excercising and leisurely swimming is good for the heart and lungs as well as the shoulders and spine. Discuss new exercise routines with your health care professional.

When considering the treatment of RA it is important that the diet should be looked at too. Removing animal fats, particularly from red meat and poultry can positively reduce inflammation. If you are overweight losing some of those pounds will aid the feeling of well being but also reduce the stress on the joints.
