What is "inflammatory arthritis?
There is an old joke. It goes like this: "Neurologists diagnose the incurable while treating rheumatologists diagnosed. Nothing could be truer than when it comes to what is called "inflammatory arthritis.
Most rheumatologists have a tendency to arthritis fall into two broad categories: inflammatory and non-inflammatory. The last category is also called "degeneration" of arthritis.
The main distinction is that the types of inflammatory arthritis have a significant amount inflammatory cells that attack the joints. These types of arthritis tend to cause more symptoms, including stiffness and pain. They also tends to be progressive. Often inflammatory types of arthritis are associated with constitutional symptoms, loss of sense of low-grade fever, weight and fatigue. inflammatory forms of arthritis can also cause serious damage to internal organs. On disability and early death can be a consequence of certain types of inflammatory arthritis. Examples of inflammatory arthritis are rheumatoid arthritis, lupus erythematosus, psoriatic arthritis, gout, infectious arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and.
inflammatory forms of arthritis can strike at any age.
inflammatory types of arthritis are typical patterns although theoretically any joint in the body can be affected.
inflammatory forms of arthritis can not be easy to categorize. Sometimes, it is clear that inflammation is present and is an important component of all symptoms. However, a specific diagnosis may not be apparent. Finally, most forms of inflammatory arthritis do not "declare" themselves and, eventually, fall into a category. But not always! This is a situation where a skilled diagnostician and clinician are worth their weight Gold!
On the other hand, the types of non-inflammatory cause symptoms of arthritis based on mechanical factors. Often degenerative Arthritis affects weight-bearing joints such as neck, lower back, hips and knees. It tends to occur in the elderly. Although it can grow, It is relatively slow. Rarely, if ever, associated with constitutional symptoms. Indeed, if constitutional symptoms are present, while the patient has more than non-inflammatory arthritis or another disease in addition to their arthritis. This type of arthritis people often associate with aging.
non-inflammatory type of arthritis can also be confusing sometimes. An example is a condition like fibromyalgia where pain occurs just everywhere. Symptomatic and subjective joint swelling may make the clinical diagnosis difficult.
The distinction between inflammatory and non inflammatory arthritis is made on the basis of a history, physical examination, laboratory tests and imaging procedures such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound.
Sometimes a patient can have two types of arthritis. For example, it is not uncommon for a patient with rheumatoid Rheumatoid longstanding also have degenerative arthritis (osteoarthritis) in a knee or hip.
Interestingly, when an arthroscope (Small telescope) is used to visualize the interior of a common, almost all types of arthritis have an inflammatory component. Scope and the type of change varies from one inflammatory disease.
The treatment of inflammatory arthritis can vary. Although the anti-inflammatory are sometimes useful, it may be necessary to start disease modifying drug therapy. Again, skills and experience of specialist Arthritis is paramount in determining the direction to head. Clearly, if inflammatory arthritis is becoming more well defined then the treatment becomes easier to define as well.
The essential point is that if you do have arthritis, it is important to seek advice a specialist in arthritis expert.
