define arthritis.what type os artritis is most common in the elderly?

Rheumatoid Arthritis is pretty common, but so is Osteoarthritis.

Rhematoid Arthritis, or RA, is an inflammatory disease whose cause is unknown. It attacks the joints, mainly hand and foot joints. It’s very painful, but there are many treatments available for it. If left untreated, it can lead to severe joint damage and deformity.

Osteoarthritis, or OA, is a condition that, when viewed upon Xray, you can see joint space narrowing. Which means the cushion that protects your joints is wearing away. It occurs in hips, knees, hand joints, even in the vertebrae. It is also very painful, and like RA, treatments are available.

Osteoporosis is NOT a type of arthritis. OP is when the bones of the spine and/or hip become spongy and porous. They begin to weaken and soften, hence the “hunchback” you might see in some people. Mostly women get it, but some men do too. OP isn’t necessarily painful, but it causes loss of height and fragility fractures. There are many treatments for this too.

OA can occur in elderly AND no so elderly.
RA can occur in elderly as well as children and young adults.
OP usually occurs in postmenopausal women, but a small percentage of older men can have it.
