Have you ever had your lower spine fused?

My doctor told me that my 4 lower discs need to be fused however, he doesn’t like to perform the procedure until I can absolutely not take the pain anymore and my quality of life sucks. It is my call as to when.

Just so you all know, I have had degenerative disc disease 1993, I have osteoarthritis in my spine, poor facet joints so disc replacment isn’t an option. I have compressed disc that is leaking (not ruptured as of yet). I have already had many 2nd and 3rd opinions.

I just need to know if you have had this procedure and how well it worked and if you would have it again knowing what you know now. I don’t want to hear about therapy first, etc. because I have been doing that for many, many years.

If you have gone the therapy route and not found a therapist that could help then this might be a way to go. Please remember these things. One fifty percent of all back surgical procedures fail. You are going to have four done so the odds are that two are not going to work out correctly. Second there is no way of telling if you are one of those people that scar. Scarring for a back patient is a horrible thing for there is no cure for it and it is progressive. The pain will be strong and it cannot be cut away as the result would only be more scarring. Third when one fuses the vertebrae it must be understood that the anchoring should be onto the sacrum. This sounds good but the problem is that the spine was made to move and you are now making it totally immovable. So the forces that normally would be taken at the L5 level are going to be passed up to the first unfused level. At that level the stress will be significant and that level is not designed for it so there is a strong chance of herniation at that level if not strong degeneration. Lastly the muscles of the spine are going to be retracted and then reattached. That makes them at least one grade weaker than before. I am sure that with your history they are weak now and this will significantly weaken them more. That will also lead to more stress on the spine. If you are going to do this hopefully you are talking to a neurosurgeon about this. Find out how many this doctor does a year and what are his success rate is. If they tell you it is above the fifty percent mark perhaps you would like to find another one that might be a little more frank with you. Also remember that most surgeons don’t worry about the positioning of the vertebrae when they are doing this and some people this causes problems. Also check and see how they are going to fixate this. Cages and fixation devices have different results. Talk to the doctor and have them explain to you in great detail about their plans. Good luck no matter what you do!
