I am very sorry for this diagnosis.
1. JRA has no cure. But if you find the right medications, you can put it into medical remission (no signs of JRA for an extended period of time) or in some cases, kids have just grown out of it.
2. There are very very few deaths from the disease. Ultimately, it really depends on what type of JRA you have. And of what you have described, you have pauciarticular, meaning less than 4 joints are affected (easiest type to grow out of) so you have very little chance of directly dying from this disease. But indirectly, if you sustain a serious enough injury it could lead to death.
3. Diet, in some cases, can help with the symptoms. It varies from person to person on what works and what doesn’t. You have to try it out and not give up. But JRA can not be cured at this moment, only put into remission.
4. You can always do sports and dance with JRA. It just depends on if you can handle the pain or not. Most people with JRA are encouraged to stay active through the course of the disease. So continue to do what you can, taking the medications prescribed. If you find it too much to handle, take it down a notch and do activities easier on the joints like walking and swimming.
5. There is no way to determine what medication will work and what medication won’t. It depends on the person. I am still struggling to find the right medication for my JRA and am currently on 4 medications.
I really don’t think you need counseling. Most people with JRA don’t. It’s hard to accept that you have this disease. It took me the longest of time and I still struggle occasionally with a “why me” kind of thing. But the best thing to do is to surround yourself with a solid support system through this and the most successful cases have parents and a good doctor as part of the support system.
I was diagnosed in February of ‘08 with JRA. I have a severe case at this point. I don’t want to discourage you with my story so I won’t tell it.
But my best advice for you is to keep a positive outlook. Live your life to the fullest you can and enjoy it.
